Transportation and Vehicle Registration in Southern Cyprus
🚘 General Information
In Southern Cyprus, driving is on the left, similar to the United Kingdom.
Vehicles have right-hand steering, and traffic regulations are strict but logically structured.
Most road signs are in both Greek and English, making it easier for foreigners to navigate.
Cyprus has very good road infrastructure, low motorway fees (most highways are free), and a well-established system of service centers and MOT inspections.
🚗 Transportation Options
Private car (purchased or imported)
Suitable for long-term stays or permanent residents.
Car rental
A short-term option; vehicles are registered with red license plates.
Public transport
The bus network operates reliably between major cities (Limassol, Paphos, Nicosia, Larnaca).
There are no trains in Cyprus.
🚙 Importing a Vehicle from Another EU Country
Holders of permanent or temporary residence can bring their car from the EU duty-free if:
- The vehicle has been owned for at least 6 months,
- It was registered in the EU and complies with European emission standards,
- The owner used the vehicle in the country of origin before moving to Cyprus.
Upon arrival on the island, the car must be registered at the Department of Road Transport (DoRT) and undergo:
- Vehicle inspection (MOT),
- Registration and issuance of a Cypriot license plate,
- Payment of registration fees and road tax.
📄 Required Documents for Vehicle Registration
- European logbook (vehicle registration certificate)
- Proof of purchase / invoice
- Insurance policy (Cyprus insurance policy)
- Proof of residence (ID, Yellow Slip, or rental agreement)
- Customs document (T2L or import certificate)
- Proof of VAT payment (if applicable for new vehicles)
⏱️ The process takes approximately 2–4 weeks from submission.
💰 Fees and Taxes
| Fee Type | Approximate Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Registration fee | €100 – €250 | Depending on vehicle type |
| Road Tax | €50 – €250 per year | Based on engine size and emissions |

🚫 Important Notes
- In Cyprus, it is not permitted to drive long-term with European license plates if you have permanent residence—you must register the vehicle within 6 months.
- Right-hand drive (RHD) vehicles are common; left-hand drive (LHD) cars can be registered but may have higher insurance costs and lower resale demand.
- Vehicle insurance and a valid MOT inspection are mandatory.
