Citizenship and Visas

📌 1. Entry Visas (Short-Term Stay)
Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has its own visa regime, different from Southern Cyprus (EU).

  • Most tourists from the EU, UK, Turkey, and many other countries receive a free tourist visa on arrival, valid for:
    • 30–90 days (depending on nationality and border control decision).
  • The visa is granted upon arrival via a passport stamp.

📌 2. Extending Your Stay
✅ How to extend:

  • Apply for a tourist visa extension or obtain a residence permit before your current visa expires.

Overstay penalty: Approximately 100 TL/day, payable upon departure from TRNC.

📌 3. Residence Permit
✅ Types of permits:

Short-Term Residence Permit

  • Most common for property owners or long-term renters.
  • Validity: 1 year, renewable annually.
  • Required documents:
    • Passport
    • Proof of property ownership (title deed) or rental contract
    • Bank statement showing sufficient funds
    • Health insurance
    • Medical check-up in TRNC (including infectious disease tests)

Work Permit

  • Required before starting employment.
  • Employer submits the application.
  • Validity: 1 year, renewable.

Student Permit

  • Issued based on acceptance to a TRNC university.
  • Requires proof of enrollment and health insurance.

📌 4. Permanent Residency

  • Permanent residency is not granted automatically.
  • After long-term residence (multiple yearly permits), an individual may apply for permanent residency, which is assessed by the TRNC Ministry of Interior.

📌 5. TRNC Citizenship
✅ How to obtain citizenship:

Marriage to a TRNC citizen

  • After at least 3 years of marriage and cohabitation, a foreigner may apply for citizenship.

Long-term legal residence

  • After 10+ years on a residence permit, one may submit an application.
  • Not guaranteed, assessed individually based on integration and good conduct.

Significant investment or contribution to the state

  • Large-scale investments, significant business activities, or contributions in science, sports, or culture may justify granting citizenship.
  • Decision made by the Council of Ministers of TRNC.

📌 6. TRNC Passport Validity and Recognition
⚠️ The TRNC passport is recognized only by Turkey and a few Muslim countries.
⚠️ Most residents of Northern Cyprus hold dual citizenship (TRNC + Turkey) or use a Cyprus Republic passport if eligible.
