Insurance and Coverage in Northern Cyprus (TRNC)
📌 1. Property Insurance
✅ Types of Insurance:
Building Insurance
Covers damage to the building: fire, earthquake, flood, storm.
Compulsory when taking out a mortgage.
Contents Insurance
Covers damage or theft of household contents and equipment.
✅ Insurance Companies:
Local insurers operate in TRNC, such as Creditwest Insurance, Koop Insurance, Iktisatbank Insurance.
They are not covered by EU insurance schemes but have a good reputation and fast claims processing.
📌 2. Car Insurance
✅ Compulsory Third-Party Insurance
Covers damage caused to other vehicles or persons.
Required by law for all vehicle owners and rental operators.
✅ Comprehensive Insurance (Full Insurance)
Covers:
- Damage to your own vehicle
- Theft
- Vandalism
- Natural hazards (fire, flood, earthquake)
✅ Validity:
Most TRNC insurers do not cover travel to:
- Southern Cyprus (EU part).
If planning to drive in Southern Cyprus, you must purchase:
- Extra border insurance (Green Card Insurance), valid only for the duration of your stay in the south.
📌 3. Health Insurance
✅ For TRNC citizens or Work Permit holders:
Compulsory public health insurance (Social Security + Health Insurance) covering basic care in public hospitals.
✅ For foreigners with a Residence Permit:
Compulsory to have health insurance:
- Local (TRNC insurers) or
- International travel/expat insurance.
✅ Private healthcare:
High-quality private clinics are available (Near East Hospital, Kolan Hospital).
Prices are lower than in the EU, but without insurance, costs can be high; expat insurance is recommended.
📌 4. Life Insurance
Not mandatory but available from local insurers.
Some banks require it as collateral for mortgage financing.
📌 5. Business Insurance
✅ Available products:
- Property and equipment insurance for the company
- Liability insurance for damages caused by business activities
- Employee insurance (social and health contributions are compulsory; commercial accident insurance is optional)
📌 6. International Coverage
⚠️ TRNC insurers are not part of EU international insurance schemes or the Green Card system, except for temporary insurance purchased at the border for Southern Cyprus.
⚠️ For travel outside TRNC, it is recommended to have:
- International travel insurance from your home country or through global expat providers (Bupa, Allianz, Cigna).
