📌 1. TRNC Constitution
✅ When was it adopted?
On 15 November 1983, TRNC declared independence.
The TRNC Constitution was approved in a referendum on 5 May 1985 and is the main legal document of the state.
📌 2. Main Principles of the Constitution
🔹 Democracy and rule of law
TRNC is a democratic, secular, and republican state.
🔹 Separation of powers
- Legislative: Parliament (Assembly of the Republic)
- Executive: President and Council of Ministers
- Judiciary: Independent courts
🔹 Fundamental rights and freedoms
- Right to life, liberty, and security
- Freedom of religion, speech, assembly, and business
- Protection of property rights
🔹 Official language and religion
- Official language: Turkish
- TRNC is a secular state – religion is separate from the government
📌 3. Legislative Power (Parliament)
✅ Assembly of the Republic (Cumhuriyet Meclisi)
- 50 members elected for 5 years
- Approves laws, budget, and supervises the government
📌 4. Executive Power
✅ President of TRNC
- Head of state, elected directly for 5 years
- Represents TRNC internationally and in Cyprus peace talks
✅ Council of Ministers (Cabinet)
- Led by the Prime Minister (leader of majority party/coalition)
- Manages domestic and economic policy
📌 5. Judicial Power
- Independent, based on common law system with local and Turkish adjustments
- Supreme Court handles appeals, constitutional, and administrative cases
📌 6. Main Laws of TRNC
In addition to the Constitution, the main legal system includes:
- ✅ Criminal Code – based on British model
- ✅ Civil Law – covers contracts, property, and obligations
- ✅ Labour Law – No. 22/1992, covers working conditions and employee rights
- ✅ Immigration Law – covers residence, visas, and work permits
- ✅ Property Acquisition Law (Foreigners) – No. 52/2008
- ✅ Banking Law – regulates banks through the Central Bank of TRNC
📌 7. Amendments
- Laws are regularly updated by Parliament according to economic, political, and security needs
- The Constitution has been amended several times, mainly regarding elections and presidential powers
⚠️ 8. Important Notes
- TRNC is not internationally recognized, so its Constitution and laws apply only within its territory
- All international treaties and agreements must be approved by TRNC Parliament and are implemented in practice via Turkey
